THE KINGDOM WITHOUT THE KING? Part 3 - Ready?

SERMON NOTES:

Reflect on this, “You want the Kingdom without the King!”

Jesus in the Final Week

Matthew 24 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Matthew 25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!
12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’
13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

How does “being ready” or “keeping watch” for the return of Jesus help us today?

·      The return of Jesus someday means I get to take Him seriously every day!

·      “Keeping watch” for Jesus keeps my focus up and forward
Now is not all I have … the best is c
oming.

THE KINGDOM WITHOUT THE KING? Part 2 - Can He Be Ignored?

SERMON NOTES:

Reflect on this, “You want the Kingdom without the King!”

Jesus in the Final Week

Mark 12

6 “He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
7 “But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
9 “What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:

“‘The stone the builders rejected    has become the cornerstone;
11 the Lord has done this,    and it is marvelous in our eyes?”

12 Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.

Matthew 21 :43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”

What was Jesus saying to the original hearers in the context of that time?

What is the Holy Spirit saying to us now in our context through these words?

1 Peter 2 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

THE KINGDOM WITHOUT THE KING? Part 1 - The King is Here

SERMON NOTES:

What does this statement mean, “You want the Kingdom without the King!”

Jesus Begins the Final Week

Mark 1114 And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.15 And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 16 And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”
20 As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.”
22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.
23
Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain (?) ,
‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’
and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he (?) says will come to pass,
it will be done for him.
24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

What is Jesus saying about the temple?

What is Jesus saying about Himself?

What is Jesus saying about the path forward for those who follow Him?

What is Jesus saying to a culture that wants to experience the realities of the Kingdom without the King?
